How Much Internet Speed Do You Really Need?

Internet Fiber CableThere are many things to do in the internet. You can do your research here, send e-mails, talk to friends and families, watch movies, conduct video conferences, play video games, and so, so much more. With the number of users rising all over the globe, internet service providers are also doing their best to attract and gain their trust. Now, they could promise you things such as high-speed internet. The thing is, do you really need a “high-speed” internet? How do you define a “high-speed” internet anyway? It actually depends on how you will use it, right? You can claim that your internet service provider is the best because you can send an e-mail in a second. You can also say you have the worst internet provider because you cannot even make a single video call to a friend overseas. Here are some of the things you need to know so that you are aware of the services of your ISP.
  • Bandwidth – This is the maximum speed you can get from your ISP depending on the plan you have bought. If you subscribed for a 5mbps (megabits per second) plan, you expect that your internet speed will not maintain such speed all the time. This is the reason why there are times that your internet seems to slow and times when everything you do is so speedy.

  • Users – If there are three of you in the house using the internet, it does not mean that you will need a 100mbps internet. You should identify what each one needs first. If one is just using the internet to research, the other one for music and video streaming, and the other one for social media purposes, then 25 mbps is already enough.
Based on one user:
  • Social media, e-mails, and research can be done well on a 1mbps connection
  • Video streaming, online games, video calls are still excellent with 5mbps speed
  • Downloading of large files and video streaming on high definition might need 10mpbs and up

  • Upload – Aside from the download speed, you might also want to consider the upload speed if you are frequently doing video calls.
Before you apply for an internet subscription, you might want to ask your internet service provider about these things so that you will not be paying more than you need.   To get more information call us at: 1-877-421-4762
